We were just informed that the following paper, "A Stochastic Geo-Partitioning Problem for Mobile Edge Computing", led by Dr. Tran, Dr. Ting Zhang (our former NCLab member, now a professor at McDaniel college in Maryland), and PhD student Thuy Nguyen (current NCLab member), has been accepted by the IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computing (TETC). IEEE TETC is a prestigious journal with impact factor 4.9! Congratulations to Ting and Thuy. Below is the abstract of the paper:

"The success of a mobile edge computing network depends critically on how to assign the edge servers to the user cells. The criterion for this assignment is application-specific. In many practical applications, the workload demanded by each cell is unknown and time-varying. So are the effective capacities of the servers. We need an assignment incurring minimum backhaul cost that is robust to these uncertainties. We also want to make the cells assigned to the same server form a geographically compact cluster. This challenge motivates us to introduce a novel stochastic geo-aware partitioning problem. As it is computationally hard, we propose a heuristic algorithm that can produce a range of solutions representing different tradeoffs between cost minimization versus geographical awareness. We evaluate the proposed algorithm using a real-world dataset."

Cuong (Charlie) Pham is a former member of NCLab. After 6 years in the industry, as a Senior Software Developer recognized for several accomplishments at Microsoft, Charlie has recently been appointed an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, starting in Fall 2018. This is a big milestone for his career.  We have another professor in the house. Congratulations, Prof. Pham!

In May, Prof. Tran paid another visit to the  National Science Foundation  (NSF) in Alexandria, VA, this time joining a panel of scientists and community leaders across the country to review proposals that would result in a better digitalized society. Technologies will do more good if they can engage participation from communities. In other words, it is important to make social impacts!

Effectively from 2018, our lab has changed its name from "Network Information Systems Lab (NISLab)" to "Network Computing Lab (NCLab)". The lab's research focus remains the same; that is, the 5S: s mart computing techniques in particular support of s ocial, s ensing, s torage, and s earch applications.

Ting Zhang, NISLab member for the last 5 years, has officially graduated. The graduation ceremony was held at Blue Hill Pavilion on May 26th, 2017. She will be a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Computer Science at McDaniel College, a private college in Maryland, starting in Fall 2017. Ting is the first student of Prof. Tran to become a professor. We wish her all the best, Professor Zhang!
